The Horological Minute

With The Horological Minute, Eric Ku and 10 Past Ten engage in a fascinating dialog with collectors and members of the watch industry, as they discuss anything and everything about watches. Think of it as the Proust Questionnaire for the watch aficionado.

FEATURING
Joshua Ganjei
This week we bring to you an interview with Joshua Ganjei, a second generation watch dealer based in Boston, MA. Joshua got his start in the business early, causing trouble at the European Watch Company store at a very young age. Eight years ago, he officially joined the family business. The European Watch Company has been a fixture on Newbury Street in Boston for over 25 years, and was started by Joshua's father Albert. In the store they carry a fine selection of both new and vintage watches. Joshua's real passion lay with vintage watches, as he as worked hard to expand their business in that area with his knowledge of various different brands, not just Rolex. A genuine vintage enthusiast, we're proud to have Joshua as this week's Horological Minute.

What was your first watch?

My first watch was a Michael Johnson limited edition SWATCH which my dad found recently. I must have been 9-10 years old when it was given to me and I was obsessed. I still have it today in completely original condition with no polish, original dial and strap :)

What was the last watch you bought?

The last watch I bought was a Omega Speedmaster 2998-1 with a very charming patina and deep chocolate brown dial. I am obsessed.

Do you prefer vintage or modern?

Vintage all the way Eric!!! This bug is a hard one to shake…..

Can you remember your last great meal? Where was it and what did you eat?

I ate at O YA in Boston with my fiance. We got the 17 course Omakase which was out of this world; if you are a foodie and are visiting Boston for a few nights this place is a must.

Do you remember what watch you were wearing?

I was wearing a Zenith A386 which took me years to find. I missed out on 5 of them before I landed the one I currently own and love.

What do you love about vintage Rolex?

I love that no 2 watches are alike. No matter what the reference, there is always something unique about that individual piece. Hunting the right vintage Rolex that suits your own tastes or “requirements” is what I love about collecting.

Strap or bracelet?

I was a strap guy until I saw how awesome all these vintage watches look on bracelets. Over the past year, I have been really enjoying GF style / JB Champion bracelets.

GMT/EXPLORER/SUB/DAYTONA or........?

I am passionate about dive watches and chronographs so I have to go with Submariner on this one followed by Daytona as a close second place.

What do you want to see come out from Rolex at the next Basel Fair?

I think people are anticipating a ceramic bezel Daytona which would be a huge hit I am sure. I would love to see a few steel sports models in a 38mm case for those of us who are human and want a watch that fits the wrist. Sky dweller complication in a steel sport model would also be a hit, in my opinion.

Can you tell us about the most interesting watch you’ve ever found/owned?

I would say the most interesting watch I own is this Blancpain Fifty Fathoms “Demo” Milspec 1 which was made as a civilian version of the well known radium model. There were very few of these made with the microbile case with the hash mark bezel. I love the watch!!

What's on your wrist today?

On my wrist today is a Heuer Carerra 2447 SN in the on my favorite high polish, straight end link bracelet.
